ENGLISH GRAMMAR 1º (June, 10th)
PAST SIMPLE
In this unit (unit 8), we are going to learn how to
form the past tense in English.
AFFIRMATIVE
The first and most important thing you have to
remember to form the past tense is that, in English, we have two types of
verbs: REGULAR and IRREGULAR verbs.
We form the past of the REGULAR VERBS adding –ED
to the infinitive.
For example : I walk (present simple)
--- I walked (past simple).
The past of the IRREGULAR
VERBS is the second column of the irregular verbs list (you have it on
pages 106-107 in your workbook). That is, they do not follow any rule, you have
to study them and learn them by heart.
For example : I sing (present simple)
--- I sang (past simple)
!!!!!! When forming the past simple of the
regular verbs , we have to remember some spelling rules.
NEGATIVE and INTERROGATIVE
To form the past simple in negative and interrogative
form, we need the help of the past simple auxiliary ‘DID’.
For example : I walked --- X I didn’t walk --- ? Did I walk?
I sang ---X I didn’t sing ---? Did I sing?
!!!!!! Notice the verb in the negative and
interrogative form is not in past (it is in infinitive), as the auxiliary ‘DID’
is already telling us that we are in past simple tense.
